Painting with Natural Pigments and Soy

September 2, 6:00-8:00pm EST

Working with natural pigments is a wonderful way to connect to your local landscape and the history of art-making. Participants in this virtual workshop will be introduced to the natural colors of mineral earth pigments and botanical lake pigments. We’ll share a demonstration of pigment grinding and paint mixing utilizing a homemade soy binder. Students following along at home can use their paints to create works on paper or fabric in a rich natural palette.

Note: The blender and strainer will be used with food-safe ingredients, and may be borrowed from the kitchen. All other tools must be craft-dedicated. Remember to always wear a mask when grinding dry pigments.

Materials List:

  • natural earth pigments or lake pigments such as ochers, umbers, indigo, chalk white, lamp black
  • dry soy beans; pre-soak 2 Tbs beans in 2 Cups water the day before class
  • blender
  • sieve
  • natural fiber fabric such as silk, linen, or cotton
  • paint palette or jam jars
  • paint brushes
